Prop firm rules explained

Know the rules before you buy the account.

A cheaper evaluation can be a worse deal if the drawdown or payout structure does not fit your trading. These are the terms worth understanding first.

E/F

Evaluation vs funded

An evaluation is the challenge stage. “Funded” often starts as a simulated funded account before a trader may progress to live capital.

DD

Drawdown

Your loss boundary. Static, EOD trailing and intraday trailing drawdown behave differently — especially after profitable trades.

DLL

Daily loss limit

The maximum permitted daily loss. Depending on the firm it can be a soft lockout for the day or a hard account breach.

%

Consistency rule

Limits how much of total profit may come from your biggest day. A 20% rule means a $1,000 best day needs at least $5,000 total profit.

90

Profit split

A 90/10 split means the trader keeps 90% of an eligible payout. It does not replace payout caps, buffers or qualification rules.

$

Payout rules & buffers

Check minimum profitable days, payout caps, buffer balances, consistency requirements and whether the qualification resets after a payout.

FAQ

Short answers to common prop firm questions

What is a futures prop firm?

A prop firm offers traders access to a defined account program under specific risk rules. Many online futures firms use simulated evaluations and simulated funded stages before some traders progress to live brokerage capital.

What is the best prop firm?

There is no single best firm for every strategy. PropFirmWave currently features Purdia Capital as its #1 pick, particularly for traders considering its standard Instant Funding structure.

What does Instant Funding mean?

It usually means skipping a traditional evaluation and entering a funded or simulated-funded stage immediately. You still need to follow the program's payout and risk requirements.

Is EOD drawdown better than intraday trailing drawdown?

Many traders find EOD drawdown easier to manage because the threshold is generally recalculated from session-end performance rather than continuously following intraday equity. Exact formulas differ by firm.

What is a consistency rule?

It limits the share of total profit that can come from one trading day. For example, under a 20% rule, a $1,000 best day generally requires at least $5,000 in total profit to satisfy the ratio.

Do all “funded” accounts trade real money?

No. Many firms first use simulated funded accounts. “Funded” should not automatically be interpreted as a live brokerage account.
